Washington County Republican Delegates – Does this letter answer your questions?

OK_GOP_seal2-150x150You’re receiving this email because you are among those designated to serve as delegates to the 2015 Washington County County convention. Attached is a letter addressing a few questions which have arisen regarding the precinct meeting and delegate nomination process.

January 29th, 2015

To all Washington County Republican Delegates,

This letter is being sent to clarify some questions regarding the 2015 Washington County precinct meeting.  As a result of information submitted via forms filled out at the Washington County precinct meeting held 1/20/2015, or for those unable to attend the precinct meeting, subsequently submitted by the midnight of 1/24/2015 deadline, you have been submitted as a delegate to the Washington County Convention, scheduled for 2/21/2015.  Registration will be from 12 noon to 1:30 pm at the Elks Lodge, 1060 Swan Dr. in Bartlesville. State party form B-6 states that such information is due

“by February 15, 2015 (or as determined by the County Chairman)”.

In this case, the county chairman determined the deadline to be 1/24/2015 to provide ample time for processing of the resulting delegate and platform information before the county convention.

Given the following passage from state form A-2:

“Some (counties) meet as one county-wide event and others meet in zones or by State House District.  OKGOP State Party Rule (SPR) 16(a) gives authority to the County Executive Committee to set the location of the Precinct Meetings where they think best for their county.”,

and given,Washington County’s decision for the precincts to meet “as one county-wide event”, the packets were distributed at that meeting and the advertising for this meeting was done by the County Executive Committee.

The Results are in for Washington County Precinct Chairs — on to the County Convention

Meeting held at Elks Lodge in Bartlesville January 20th.  Several people tried to attend but were unable to find the building.  There are also some issues with how the meeting was called and if enough advance notice was given.  I have made a formal verbal (but witnessed) request to the chair for a copy of the executive committee members.  Another precinct chair has made a written request for the minutes of the executive committee meetings.  We’ll see what is produced and if it is done so timely.  It appears that Mike Dunlap plans to run for chair at the county convention.  That seems like a bit of a conflict of interest to me because he already holds an elective office.  It remains to be seen if the grassroots will permit such a thing to occur.

Anyway you may be able to add your name to the county convention list by contacting your precinct chair and letting them know of your interest so that they can turn your name in.  There is some discussion over the appropriate cutoff for that to occur, but suffice it to say if you don’t ask it sure won’t happen!

Apparently all the committees were set without input from the county committee once again, because we haven’t met in ages.  If I find out who is chairing the committees and when they are meeting I will let you know.  Right now it appears a precinct chair doesn’t need to know that information in this county.

Here are the results of the precinct officer selections from our meetings this week.

Washington County Republican Convention:

The Washington County Republican Party Convention will also be held at the Elks Lodge on February 21st with registration starting at 12 noon.

(Elks Lodge Address: 1060 Swan Drive, Bartlesville, OK 74006)  Be sure you do a practice run on finding this if you don’t know because the name isn’t on the building and the street isn’t labeled, but a longtime resident will have no problem.  I sure hope we get better at welcoming newcomers and making things easier and following the rules and keeping things grassroots not top-down.  Ah well, I can dream can’t I?!

What Does a Precinct Look Like and Do You Know Your Chair?

Full disclosure for those of you reading this who do not know me:  I am a Republican, so this is from a Republican perspective, but having said that, some things apply to both parties. Find out more if you are interested and get involved in your local community.

So here is what the Washington County Precinct Map in Oklahoma looks like:

Once you figure out your precinct, then you can find out who your precinct chair is — well you could if the party in Washington County had a website and shared that kind of information…. or if the state GOP published party officers at the precinct level.  But sadly not there either.  Here is the best I know based on the biennial meeting in 2013 and some special efforts that I went through to publish the names at the time:  Washington County Republican Precinct Leaders (2013).

From the About page on Oklahoma GOP website:

History: Since 1906, the Oklahoma Republican Party has been working to make Oklahoma a better place for families and businesses to prosper. The OKGOP represents the values of most Oklahomans. We are the party of lower taxes, smaller government, personal empowerment, and individual responsibility.

The Republican Party has grown to become a powerful force in Oklahoma today. During the 2008 election cycle, the McCain-Palin ticket won 65.4% of the vote in OK, the highest percentage in the nation, thereby giving Oklahoma the title of “Reddest State in the Country.” In 2010, the OKGOP had the most successful election cycle for Oklahoma Republicans in state history- sweeping all eight statewide races, including Governor, and expanding majorities in both the state house and senate.

As Ronald Reagan put it, “A political party is a mechanical structure created to further a cause. The cause, not the mechanism, brings and holds the members together. I believe the Republican Party can hold and should provide the political mechanism through which the goals of the majority of Americans can be achieved.”

Statement of Principles:

We believe in limited government, individual liberty, and personal moral responsibility.

We believe Oklahoma should be a place of opportunity where people who work hard and abide by the rules can pursue their own dreams with a reasonable expectation of success.

As Republicans we believe:

  1. Our rights of life, liberty, and property are natural rights granted to us by God and protected by the Constitution.
  2. In the right to worship as we please without government intrusion or interference.
  3. The federal government’s power is constitutionally limited, yet responsible for protecting our sovereignty, establishing justice under law, and securing our liberty through a strong national defense and effective law enforcement.
  4. God is the Author and Creator of life and that all human life, both born and unborn, should be protected.
  5. In traditional marriage consisting of one man and one woman.
  6. It is the private sector and free market principles that best stimulate economic development rather than government subsidies or programs.
  7. Taxes collected at all levels of government should be used only for legitimate government functions, and those functions carried out efficiently so that tax rates may be kept as low as possible.
  8. That government closest to the people governs best and is preferred to centralized control.
  9. It is the right of every parent to act in his or her children’s best interest including choosing the form of education, whether public school, private school, or home school.
  10. We should welcome immigrants who want to legally seek freedom and opportunity, who want to work for a living and who will embrace our values, learn the English language, and respect our national sovereignty.
