My exhortation for how to live comes from Micah 6
He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God? Micah 6:8 (King James Version)
Sometimes we think that things are overwhelming and life is too complex and the problems are too big. I learned this verse growing up as a song. Don’t you love the way scripture set to music embeds in our memory and pops up exactly when we need it! God has much to say to us in scripture about just weights and measures and how to treat our fellow man and it boils down to rather simply this:
DO JUSTLY
LOVE MERCY
WALK HUMBLY
Think about the order of the items with the action item on top. Do justly or as we would say today ‘act justly’. But in doing justice, have a heart for mercy. While demanding justice, be ready to extend mercy appropriately or with sacrificial love and hope! In the midst of acting justly and extending mercy, above all walk humbly.
Our great example in all of this is Our Father in heaven. If He could risk it all for us by sending His own Son to die in our place do we really have any excuse for not doing the same. What if by modeling justice and mercy and humility to others, I could effect positive change in my family, my church, my community, my city, my nation, and my world?
Worth a try don’t you think! Did I forget to mention that we are going to need His help to do so? Tis true and He is able to help us if we will but look to Him in all matters. He wouldn’t have told us to do it and sent us a Savior if it wasn’t what He wanted us to know and do now would He!
May you walk humbly, love mercy and do justice as you model His great example before others. I think you will see Him smile and feel His presence as you do so!
